International Academic Meetings
Investigations into the history of the Order of St. Lazarus The International Meetings should serve as a forum to discuss and academically research controversial aspects related to the Order’s history. The participation of early career scholars and postgraduate research researchers is positively encouraged. The Sixth International Academic Meeting is scheduled to be held in the Universitas Studiorum building of the Order of St John in Valletta, Malta during the weekend of the 23-24 October 2026. There will be, in addition, a preliminary meeting on the 22 October which will address leprosy-related and haliological issues related to the patron saints of leprosaria. A guided tour of Valletta and the buildings of the Knights of St John there will be organized on Sunday 25 October 2026 [depending on demand]. The First International Conference of the International Academy was held in Malta in November 2015.
The Second International Conference of the International Academy was held in Palermo, Sicily in June 2017. The event coincided with the International Pilgrimage of the Order dedicated to King Saint Louis IX in Monreale, Sicily. The Third International Conference of the International Academy was held in Malta in October 2019. The Fourth International Academic Meeting - Reviewing the history of the Order of St. Lazarus - was scheduled to be held on the 7th April 2021 at Velehrad (Czech Republic) in conjunction with the International Pilgrimage of the Order. The Covid-19 pandemic caused the meeting to be placed in abayance - instead a series of pre-narrated online lectures were prepared and made available. Another one-day Academic Meeting was eventually held in Gotha, Germany in July 2023 on the occasion of the 800th anniversary commemoration of the establishment of the Order in Germany. The Fifth International Academic Meeting was held in Valletta, Malta in February 2024. The event coincided with the International Pilgrimage of the Order dedicated to Saint Paul. |
